Some patterns don’t respond to willpower. They respond to being understood.
I’m Joseph Robson, a licensed mental health counselor in New York. I practice psychodynamic psychotherapy with adults navigating anxiety, OCD, depression, and trauma — in person on the Upper East Side, or online anywhere in New York State.

By the time most people call me, they’ve already tried to handle it alone — often for years.
I specialize in working with adults experiencing anxiety, OCD, depression, and trauma. My training is psychodynamic, which means we’ll look beyond the symptoms themselves to understand the experiences, conflicts, and patterns beneath them. Together, we’ll explore not only what is making life difficult now, but how these patterns developed, what they may have once helped you manage or protect against, and how they can begin to change.

If any of this feels familiar, you’re in the right place.
None of these mean something is wrong with you. They mean something in you is working very hard — and it’s tired. That’s where we start.

“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life — and you will call it fate.”
— C.G. Jung

The approach
Therapy that asks why, not just what to do about it.
The symptom is rarely the whole story. The checking, the worry, the flatness — these usually have a logic to them, a history that made them necessary once. Psychodynamic work follows the thread: the behaviors, thoughts, and patterns that limit your ability to move forward, and the experiences that shaped them.
It happens in an unhurried, nonjudgmental room where you can say the thing you haven’t said out loud yet — and where the point, always, is more room to live.
